Putin Just Doubled Down On Spy Balloons With Something Much Worse

Vladimir Putin today sent nuclear-capable bombers into the skies in a display of strength to the West, as Norway warned that Russia has deployed tactical nuclear weapon-armed vessels in the Baltic Sea for the first time in 30 years.

The noisy Tu-95MS ‘Bears’ flew for more than seven hours over the Bering Sea, accompanied by Su-30 fighter jets from Russia’s Eastern Military District. The Bering Sea separates the US state of Alaska and Russia’s far-east.

Since Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian officials and propagandists have repeatedly threatened the West with nuclear weapons.

Russia’s language has escalated against Ukraine’s allies in recent months as they have pledged increasingly more powerful weapons to Kyiv’s on-going war effort.

The bombers took flight as the Norwegian Intelligence Service said in its annual report that ships from Russia’s Northern Fleet had started going to sea with nuclear weapons. This was common practice during the Cold War, but the report noted this was the first time the modern Russian Federation had done so.

‘The key part of the nuclear potential is on the submarines and surface ships of the Northern Fleet,’ the Norwegian intelligence report noted.

Tactical nuclear weapons are ‘a particularly serious threat in several operational scenarios in which NATO countries may be involved,’ the report said, adding that Russia also had submarine capabilities, anti-satellite weapons and cyber capabilities that would pose a threat in any direct conflict with Norway and its NATO allies.

Meanwhile, NATO defence ministers met in Brussels on Tuesday, where Ukraine repeated its call for Western countries to provide it with fighter jets.

The United States and its NATO allies and partners voiced more concern about Kyiv’s needs for large amounts of ammunition.

But despite the looming logistical challenges, U.S. Joint Chiefs Chair Army General Mark Milley told reporters that Russia has lost strategically, operationally and tactically in its war in Ukraine, as the war approached its one-year anniversary.
